Often referred to as “The Isa” by locals, Mount Isa is approximately 1830klm by road from Brisbane and 904Klm by road from Townsville.
Qantas and Macair Airlines operate on a daily basis in and out of the City.
Mount Isa came into existence because the area holds vast mineral deposits.
Mount Isa Mines(now Xstrata) is one of the largest producers of zinc, lead and silver and is one of Australia’s largest underground mines. Mount Isa is also a major service centre for the surrounding Towns and Outback Stations.
Mount Isa City has an estimated population of 23,970 and growing. The population is a very multi cultural community as many nationalities made Mount Isa their home in the early years.
The Mount Isa Irish Club and Carpentaria Buffalo Club are rated as some of the best Clubs in Australia. Both Clubs have state of the art facilities. Town Leagues Club, RSL, Island Bowling Club are smaller but offer great facilities for members and guests. These Clubs give back to the community by financially supporting sporting Clubs, Dance and Musical groups and various community and charity events.
Mount Isa is a very active sporting town and we have exceptional sporting facilities including an 18 Hole Golf Course. Lake Moondarra is a 20klm drive from the city and has been stocked with Barramundi over the past 10 years resulting in monster sized Barramundi up to 1.3m being caught. It is a relaxing way to spend the weekend or days off, whether it is water skiing, canoeing, sail boating or fishing. There are BBQ facilities and a recreational camp that can be hired out for Group Bookings. There are also great camping spots in the Selwyn Ranges which surround Mount Isa.
Every August Mount Isa Rotary Clubs host the Mount Isa Rodeo, which is the largest Rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere. People travel from every part of the Globe to attend this event. In 2007 the Mount Isa City Council established a Multi Million Dollar Complex near the City Centre to accommodate this event and in 2008 we celebrate 50 years of Rodeo action.
Mount Isa has two Catholic Primary Schools and a Senior Catholic College, one Christian College, six State Primary Schools, one State Junior Campus and the Secondary Campus is located next to the Mount Isa Institute of TAFE. We have Five Childcare Centres, Family Day Care, a Special Education Unit, and a number of kindergartens. Shopping Facilities include Kmart, Coles, Woolworths, Food For Less, IGA and an amazing range of speciality shops.
