Being the school holiday season, your kids will no doubt have plenty of spare time on their hands. The Mount Isa Family Fun Park is always a popular option with kids. It has a water park, double flying fox, skate park, bike track, playground and grassed areas.

It’s a great place for kids to burn off excess energy while you relax in one of the covered seating or barbecue areas.

Places to stay cool and calm in Mt Isa

If you want to escape the hot weather completely, Splashez Aquatic Centre is the place to be. It has a kids pool with water features, as well as a 50 metre pool. There’s also plenty of shade sails and grassed areas.

If you’re looking for a relaxing, non-aquatic kids activities over summer, you could try:

Your kids will be able to see fossils that help to tell a unique story of the history of Australia’s diverse native wildlife. There are interactive displays that bring these ancient fossils to life.

This tour will show your kids how Mt Isa comes alive underground through the hard work of the mining community. They’ll enjoy being fitted out in overalls and cap lamps and hear the earth rumble as drilling takes place.

Give your kids a true appreciation of Mt Isa’s rich history, including a stunning collection of outback gems as well as the Rodeo Hall of Fame. Your kids will be able to learn all about the most famous riders to have competed and tamed the bucking horses and bulls over the years.

Mount Isa Mines Rodeo

Held in August each year, this legendary four-day event is guaranteed to keep kids of all ages entertained. There’s nothing like the thrill of seeing a rider trying to tame these bucking beasts! It’s the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere and it attracts local, interstate and international visitors.

Adventure spots outside of Mount Isa

Of course, you don’t just have to limit yourself to Mt Isa when it comes to fun family activities with your kids. You can experience the great outdoors at places like:

  • Lake Moondarra (just a 15 minute drive away and a great spot if you have a kayak or a boat and want to do some paddling, fishing or water skiing).
  • Lawn Hill Gorge in Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park if you want to go on an adventure camping or four wheel driving trip (it’s about a four hour drive to this World Heritage listed area). Just avoid the wet season (October to April) when many campsites like nearby Adels Grove are closed.
  • Mellish Park on the Gregory River is one of our personal favourites (in fact, head here and you might bump into us!). You can set up your tent here for free, the river is crystal clear and flowing all year round – making it perfect for swimming.

You can make family memories to last a lifetime at these spots.
