Mount Isa sporting fun: Do you spectate or partake
Whether you want to watch sport, coach a team, play yourself or have your kids play, there’s plenty of sport in Mount Isa for everyone – men, women and kids. It also has a rich sporting history. Famous Mt Isa sports stars include golfer Greg Norman and tennis ace Pat Rafter!
Where to watch live sport in Mount Isa
Mount Isa has some great live sporting venues, including:
- Alec Inch Oval hosts rugby league action throughout winter. It has a capacity of 4,000 with two undercover grandstands. It has day and night matches at both junior and senior levels during the rugby league season. Kalyn Ponga and Scott Prince are two of the many rugby league stars who played their early football in Mt Isa.
- Buchanan Park Arena (where the famous Mount Isa Mines Rodeo is held in August each year – it’s the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere).
Buchanan Park Arena is also a popular venue for motorsport shows until the planned new North West Motor Sports Complex is built in Mt Isa. It can cater for 4,500 spectators and has all the modern amenities you’d expect.
If you’re more of a ‘pub TV’ spectator of sporting events both in Australia and around the world, you can make them social events with your mates at two popular sports bars in town – the Blarney Bay at the Mount Isa Irish Club or the Rodeo Bar & Grill at the Isa Hotel.
The Blarney Bar has a giant LED screen and 14 large LCD TV screens to ensure you won’t miss any action no matter where you’re seated.
Sports to play or coach in Mount Isa
If you or your kids would like to play sport in Mt Isa (or you’d like to coach), you have more than 30 different sports and over 70 local clubs to choose from. They include:
- golf at the 18-hole Mt Isa Golf Club where you can play socially or competitively, or just learn how to play. Both adults and kids are welcome. 11-year-old local prodigy Riley Stewart won the handicap division at the Mt Isa Open in 2020, beating all the adults in the field! Maybe another Greg Norman is on the way?
- tennis at the Copper City Tennis Club. Who knows, your son or daughter may become a champion like Mt Isa’s own Pat Rafter!
- rugby league. Five clubs play in the Mount Isa Rugby League competition at both junior and senior levels. Both men’s and women’s A Grade teams compete at senior level each season.
- Australian football league. AFL in Mount Isa is popular with five clubs to choose from, you can join the Tigers, Buffaloes or Rhinos, to name a few. The season is from April to August.
- basketball at the newly renovated Mount Isa Basketball Stadium. Both junior and senior competitions are played from February to November each year.
- netball at the range of clubs in the Mount Isa Netball Association who compete at junior, senior and mixed levels.
- athletics at Mount Isa District Athletics, who cater for athletes from the age of 4 through to adults.
- swimming at the Mount Isa Heat Swimming Club, who host weekly meets for kids throughout the warmer months.
- cricket. Junior competitions are available for boys and girls of all ages, and the Mount Isa Cricket Association also runs a senior competition each season.
- gymnastics at a range of gyms Mount Isa has to offer, as well as the PCYC Mount Isa.
- hockey at one of the four Mount Isa Hockey Association clubs who compete at both junior and senior level.
- boxing and martial arts at a variety of Mount Isa clubs.
