Moving house checklist
Moving house can be both exciting and daunting at the same time. It can also be more stressful and time-consuming than it needs to be if you don’t plan your move well. Read on to find out how you can have the most hassle-free and least time-consuming move possible.
Moving out checklist
Moving out comes before moving in, so it makes sense to start with that process first. Here are the key things you need to consider and organise as part of moving out of your current home, whether it be in Mount Isa or elsewhere.
1. Work out what you’re going to move
This sounds obvious, but you don’t have to take everything with you when you move. It can be a good chance to sell or get rid of things you don’t use regularly if you don’t need them. Take the opportunity to do that. The less you have to move, the less time-consuming and costly it will be.
2. Work out what you can move yourself
Anything that you can move yourself will save you money compared to getting a removalist service to do it for you. But the flip side is that it may be a bit more time-consuming and stressful, especially if you have large items to move, or you’re moving them a long way.
3. Work out what you’ll need help to move
If you need (or want) help to move some of your things to save yourself time and hassle, then consider asking family and friends for help. Anyone you know own a ute?
You could also consider booking a professional removalist service. Before you do, make sure you get a few quotes, look at their online reviews, or ask for referrals from people you know who have recently moved.
4. Get yourself plenty of packing boxes and packing tape (and pack carefully)
It’s surprising how many boxes you’ll need. Make sure that you also pack fragile items carefully by using plenty of soft padding and bubble wrap to prevent any damage in transit. You can also consider taking out moving insurance if you hire a removalist.
5. Organise for all your utility services to be turned off on your moving date
This includes gas, electricity, water, internet and landline phone services.
6. Do (or arrange) a final clean
This is especially important if you’re moving out of a rental property to ensure that you’ll get your bond back.
Moving in checklist
Moving into your new home is the other half of a move. Here are the key things you need to consider and organise as part of moving into your new home, whether it be in Mt Isa or elsewhere.
1. Organise for all your utility services to be turned on in your name on your moving date
You should be able to do this when you arrange to turn off the services at your old address.
2. Organise for your address to be changed
This includes arranging for it to be changed on your driver’s licence, as well as contacting any people or organisations who regularly send you mail or deliveries. You can also organise a temporary forwarding of your old mail to your new address.
3. Unpack!
You’re nearly there. You can unpack gradually if you’re too worn out to do it on the same day or weekend that you move in!
The bottom line
Moving house doesn’t have to be stressful or too time-consuming if you plan and organise your move well.
