Outdoor entertainment for when the rellies visit

If you’re like many Mount Isa residents, a lot of your relatives and friends might live a long way away. They may have never even been to Mount Isa, so when they come to visit, you’ll naturally want to show them around. Here are some ideas for outdoor things you can do together.

Visit Lake Moondarra

If your visitors like fishing, Lake Moondarra is a great spot to go. It’s even better if you have a boat and water skiing gear, or a kayak to paddle around. It’s also a great place just to cool off and relax.

Go swimming at one of our local watering holes

If you have a four wheel drive, there are some great waterholes in and around Mount Isa that you can get to. They include:

  • the Three Steps waterfall (aka Three Sisters),
  • Warrigal Waterhole (aka Painted rock),
  • Paroo Waterhole,
  • Fountain Springs, and
  • East Leichhardt Dam.

You can read all about them and how to get to each one here. You can also camp at both Fountain Springs and East Leichhardt Dam for free if you want.

Visit Splashez Aquatic Centre

Splashez is popular with both kids and adults all year round. It has an Olympic-sized pool as well as a kids’ pool with fun water features. It also has shaded barbecue facilities.

Go to the Mount Isa Family Fun Park

The Mount Isa Family Fun Park is a great place to go if you or any of your visitors have kids. It’s the largest playground in Queensland for all ages, and it’s features include:

  • a water park,
  • a double flying fox,
  • large grassed areas
  • separate junior and senior playgrounds,
  • a bike track, and
  • barbecue facilities.

Go to the City Lookout at sunset

While your visitors are in Mount Isa, make sure you catch a sunset with them at the City Lookout. It’s a great time and spot to not only see panoramic 360 degree views of the city, but to take some great photos as well.

Play a round of golf

The Mount Isa Golf Club is the only place where you’ll find grassed greens in north west Queensland and it’s well worth a visit as part of any visitor’s experience. It has 18 holes. Did you know that golfing legend Greg Norman was born in Mount Isa?

Go to the Mount Isa Rodeo

The famous Mount Isa Rodeo is a four-day event that’s held in August each year. It’s the largest rodeo event in the southern hemisphere.

This year’s event starts on Thursday August 11 to Sunday August 14. You won’t just see great rodeo action, there’s also plenty of other entertainment as well including live music acts. Guy Sebastian has already been locked in to perform at this year’s Mount Isa Rodeo.

Go to the Mount Isa races

The Mount Isa Race Club holds a limited number of Saturday race meetings throughout the year and they are always fun events. The biggest event on the calendar is the Isa Cup that’s run in June each year.

Food and drink options

Of course, it’s always great to relax indoors after your outdoor activities by having a great meal and some drinks. You can read all about Mount Isa’s best pubs and bars here.
