Sneak peak at Mount Isa’s centenary celebrations

Prospector John Campbell Miles knew he was onto something when he tried his luck in Mount Isa in 1923. He soon discovered what lay beneath the soil and took out a lease. He named the area Mount Isa, later selling it for 10,000 pounds to Mount Isa Mines (owned by Glencore today).

Events Calendar

The Mount Isa City Council has nearly three quarters of a million dollars in funding for the Mt Isa centenary celebrations. About two-thirds of this funding was provided by the federal government in October 2021. The remainder will be contributed by the Council.

The Mount Isa centenary logo

The Mount Isa centenary logo includes artwork by local Indigenous artist Glenda McCulloch. The first zero on the logo was designed by Glenda and features kangaroo tracks, a star, Kalkadoon headwear (the traditional owners of the land) and an Indigenous meeting place.

The logo also features a visual representation of Mount Isa’ skyline, our smelter stacks, firework and the local landscape.

The bottom line

Next year really will be a once in a century event in Mount Isa. It can be as memorable as we want to make it. Why not get involved, celebrate and have some fun in this great place we call home? Plenty of people who no longer live in Mount Isa will likely want to return to be part of the celebrations as well.
