What to do when friends and rellies visit in Mount Isa

If you ever have friends or rellies visiting you in Mount Isa, the chances are that they will have come a long way to see you. So, you’ll want to show them our unique Mt Isa lifestyle, sights and hospitality. Here are a few ideas for you, starting with organised tours.

Best of Mount Isa Tour

This daily tour departs from Outback at Isa and runs for two hours. It showcases Mount Isa’s traditional tin homes, our diverse flora and fauna, and of course, our famous mine where they will also get a photo opportunity in front of the lead smelter and bore mill.

Finally, they’ll see the Arts on Alma studio and Buchanan Park where our iconic Mount Isa Rodeo is held in August each year.

Discover Mount Isa Tour

The Discover Mount Isa Tour is full-day experience that includes everything from the two-hour Best of Mount Isa Tour, plus all of the following:

  • a visit to the Riversleigh Fossil Discovery Centre, where you and your friends or rellies can see fossils from the Riversleigh World Heritage Area.
  • the Hard Times Mine Tour (including a free souvenir) that takes you underground for a genuine Mount Isa experience.
  • the Lake Moondarra Sunset Tour (see details below).
  • a meal and refreshments.

Lake Moondarra Sunset Tour

This 3-hour tour will take them out to the picturesque Lake Moondarra. As we all know, it’s our best spot for recreational water activities like swimming, boating and fishing. The Lake is surrounded by Transport Bay and it offers stunning outback scenery including plenty of amazing birdlife, especially at spots like Lake Lookout.

Drinks and a delicious ploughman’s platter are served at sunset on this tour to ensure that you and your friends or relatives won’t be thirsty or hungry while you’re admiring all the scenery.

You can book any of the tours we’ve highlighted so far in this article via North West Tours. And if you have the time and want to venture further afield, they also run tours to Cloncurry.

Other things to do

If you don’t want to go on an organised tour, there are plenty of other things to do in and around Mount Isa with visiting friends or rellies, including:

  • swimming at one of our local waterholes, like the Three Steps Waterfall, Warrigal Waterhole (Painted Rock) or Paroo waterhole.
  • camping at Fountain Springs or East Leichhardt Dam.
  • visiting the City lookout at Sunset to take in 360-degree Mount Isa views.
  • playing golf at the Mount Isa Golf Club.
  • going to the Mount Isa races.
  • dropping into your favourite Mount Isa pubs, bars or restaurants for refreshments and a great meal.

And if your visitors time their trip well, they could even catch the Mount Isa Rodeo and all of the associated activities in early August. After all, there’s nowhere else that they will be able to watch the largest rodeo event in the Southern Hemisphere!

The bottom line

There’s plenty of ways to show off what a great and unique place Mount Isa is when your out-of-town friends or rellies come for a visit. Make sure you give them a genuine taste of our unique Mount Isa lifestyle when they do!
